ORGAN PIPE NATIONAL MOMUMENT

The Gregoire family set out yesterday on a 300 mi. trip through the desert to visit the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Bev is checking out an organ pipe cactus, which is distinctive because its many branches grow from a base at the ground, instead of growing from a straight massive trunk like the saguaro. The desert flowers and cactus are really beginning to bloom now and we will try to capture some of its beauty in the next few weeks.
The ocotillo is not a cactus, but a member of the ocotillo family and blooms with flame-red flowers, which attract humming birds during the spring season.

This is a cholla cactus in full bloom, it is also known as the "jumping cactus" because its spiny segments detach so easily and stick into skin and clothing.

Mount Ajo, 4808 msl, is the highest point in the Organ Pipe Monument area. This peak can be climbed by an experienced hiker, but we took a pass on that opportunity.

This arch is quite a spectacular sight, it is 720 ft above the road level and is 90 ft wide & 36 ft high. Our 21 mile loop trip through the park took a little over 2 hours and was very enjoyable since most of the snowbirds are headed north, and the tourist attractions have very little traffic, so our visit was like a private outing to this place of beauty.
