MONTEZUMA'S CASTLE

Bev and I took a road trip to the Verde Valley & Sedona to see the sights in the mountains north of Phoenix. Just to the north of Camp Verde is the Montezuma Castle National Monument. The Castle is one of the best preserved cliff dwellings in the United States even though it has not been occupied since 1400 AD. It was built by the "Sinagua" people and was thought to be their home for several centuries. The name of the site was given by veterans of the Mexican-American War and was inspired by the words from the Marine Corps song lyrics "From the halls of Montezuma", although this site had no connection to the Aztec emperor.
