Saturday was a great day for a road trip, so we drove east from Apache Junction to the mining towns of Superior and Globe. Bev took this picture of a large open pit copper mine just out of Superior. This pit is over two miles wide and over 1000 ft deep.

This cave dwelling is one of the main attractions at the Tonto National Monument, it is a very steep climb up the trail and took about 40 min. for Bev, Skip, BJ & Dixie to navigate up the hill. Bev kept saying she thought we were in better shape from our daily exercise on the Wii. Arizona has many well preserved cave dwelling sites and this one was really worth the trip.

This view point is about half way up the trail to the cliff dwellings. Dixie was supposed to pose for this picture, but spotted a small lizzard just as I snapped the shot.

This housing project was started around the year 1100 and was occupied for about 350 years.

The return trip down from the cliff dwellings provided a great view of Lake Roosevelt and the valley below.

Arizona's Lake Roosevelt has it's origin in 1906 and named for President Theodore, it serves a very similar purpose as the Lake Roosevelt we enjoy in Washington State, boating, camping and fishing.

The Salt River Valley downstream from Theododore Roosevelt Dam, this is a very beautiful river valley in the midst of a stark and dry desert.

The final rest stop after a 145 mi. trip through some of the most senic country in Arizona. The drive down the Salt River Canyon is on dirt and gravel roadway but it is truely worth the trip to the car wash.
